Research shows that trees add to total property value. Unfortunately, the law does not allow compensation for the sentimental value or aesthetic qualities of a tree.
The Council of Tree and Landscape Appraisers has established methods that assist a tree appraiser in determining the value of trees, including large trees that can’t be replaced. Tree appraisals are often needed for the following:

  1. Insurance claims for tree or plant loss

  2. Tree and boundary disputes

  3. Estimating repair and replacement costs

  4. Expert witness for litigation

Tree appraisal is more of an art than a science. The appraiser must be sensitive to the client’s loss yet offer an unbiased and qualified opinion.

It is possible to get the compensation you deserve without having to go to court. When you take into account the costs to all parties involved, it is sometimes more cost efficient to avoid litigation. A tree appraisal is a good starting point for any negotiation.

A site visit is often required to collect data, photos and testimony, and office time may be needed to research repair costs, make calculations and write a report. Sometimes a phone consultation is all that is needed. Onebark can help you make the right decision for your circumstances.
